Student in Dataran Merdeka protest charged with obstruction

KUALA LUMPUR: A student allegedly involved in a protest at Dataran Merdeka has been charged in the Magistrate's court here with obstructing a public servant in his duty.
Omar Mohd Azmi, who is in his final year of a Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health in a private college in Ulu Klang here, pleaded not guilty to deliberately obstructing Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) enforcement officer Mohd Masran Mamat, 34, from discharging his public functions of arresting and escorting Mohd Fahmi Reza Mohd Zarin, 35.
The offence is said to have occured at about 8.05am on April 22 at Dataran Merdeka here.
He was charged under section 186 of the Penal Code, which upon conviction, carries a penalty of two years' imprisonment or a fine of up to RM10,000 or both.
Deputy public prosecutor Wong Chai Sia asked for bail of RM4,000 to be set.
Counsel Syahredzan Johan, however, asked for a lighter amount to be set, saying the accused had no previous criminal record.
He also asked the court to consider that it was Omar's birthday at the time of the charge.
Magistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir set bail at RM1,000 with one surety and set next mention date for May 8.
Bail was paid by the accused's father.
